It was the call that Liberty had been dreading. She knew it was coming and it made her anxious. Still, it was a conversation she was certain had to happen, but the uncertainty was in how it would all go. She wasn't even certain what to think anymore.

Standing up from her couch, Liberty looked into the phone screen and let it ring a few more times. Then she took a deep breath and answered.

"Hey there," Liberty said in a bright and happy tone, using her acting skills well. "What's shaking?"

"Hey Libs," Jessica said, in a voice that didn't reciprocate the feeling Liberty was trying to convey. "You have a moment to chat?"

"Of course," replied Liberty. "I'm sure I know what you're calling about." She paused, took another deep breath. "The pictures with Kyle. Right?"

"Right," said Jessica. "Look, I know you two are close and that's totally cool. I think it's great that you found someone you can connect with at work. It doesn't always happen."

"Yeah," agreed Liberty. "I'm really happy that the show brought Kyle and I together."

"But I have to admit," Jessica went on. "Those pictures. They definitely had an air of romance to them. You know?"

"It's really not like that," said Liberty in earnest. "I know how it looks, I know how intimate it feels. But the paparazzi probably snapped a thousand pictures and found the ones that looked the most incriminating. It's not reality."

Liberty wandered into her kitchen and leaned on the granite counter as she talked, trying to brace herself up. She wasn't feeling very confident lately. Despite that her career was taking off, everything felt like it was getting far more complicated than she had ever anticipated.

"Well," said Jessica, pausing and ruminating on Liberty's words. "I trust you, Liberty, I really do. I just wonder... maybe Kyle feels something for you. Have you ever considered that?"

"What?" Liberty said, taken aback by Jessica's insinuation. "Really? You think Kyle might be interested in me? That's crazy, Jess."

"Is it?" said Jessica. "I mean, look at those pictures again. Look at the expression on his face, how he looks at you."

"He knows I'm gay," Liberty countered. "He knows I'm with you."

"Okay, but... maybe he thinks he has a chance anyway," said Jessica. "I know that's crazy. But I've had guys try to pull that on me before. And Liberty, you have to remember, you and I go way back. I know you've dated men before."

Liberty was silent for a moment. Although being with Jessica absolutely felt like the rekindling of an old friendship, some of Liberty's memories had been hazy. It had never even crossed her mind that their shared past would come up like it did. Liberty had dated men before, that was true. But very few people would know that about her. Jessica was obviously one of them.

It all put a different spin on the conversation for Liberty. Things were changing.

"If you think I'm interested in Kyle, well, whatever," said Liberty. "Believe whatever you want."

"No, Liberty," protested Jessica.
